Traffic fines, tolls and citations
Who bills you for a fine, how to appeal one, and how tolls are paid.
Fines are the responsibility of the driver. Because the car is registered to us, the notice reaches us first — what happens next depends on how much time is left to deal with it.
Normally: the authority bills you directly
We identify you as the driver for the period in question and pass on your details. The authority then deals with you directly, and we charge you nothing.
Occasionally: we settle it and pass it on
Where a payment deadline is about to run out and the fine would otherwise grow or escalate, we pay it first to stop that happening, then charge you the amount we paid. You always hear from us when this happens — it never appears without explanation.
Good to know
- This covers speeding, parking and any other offence during your rental period
- It applies to offences abroad as well as in Bosnia and Herzegovina
- Notices often arrive weeks after your rental has ended
- A parking ticket for the way the car was left at the handover is settled by us and passed on to you
Read it against your rental, pay it before the deadline if it is correct, and appeal directly with the authority if it is not.
Check it first
- Compare the date, time and place with your rental period
- Check the registration plate against the car you had
- Note the payment deadline — paying on time avoids reminder charges being added
If you think it is wrong
Appeal directly with the authority that issued it — the procedure is described on the notice itself. We cannot appeal on your behalf, but we will provide your rental agreement as supporting evidence if you need it. Ask us and we will send it.
Watch the deadline: an appeal does not usually pause the payment deadline. Check on the notice what applies before you decide to wait.

Yes, if we were the ones who charged you. Where the authority billed you directly, the refund comes from them, not from us — we never took your money in the first place.
If we charged you the fine
Send us the decision overturning the notice, together with your reservation number. Once we have it, we refund the amount to the payment method it was taken from.
What to send us
- The authority decision cancelling the notice, with its reference number and date
- Your reservation number
How long it takes
We issue the refund to the original payment method. How quickly it lands depends on your bank, and usually takes 5 to 10 business days.

Tolls, road fees and vignettes are paid by the driver as you go and never appear on your rental invoice. We do not fit an electronic toll device to our cars, so there is nothing billed to you afterwards.
How you pay them
- In Bosnia and Herzegovina, take a ticket when you join the motorway and pay when you leave, in cash or by card
- Serbia, Croatia and Montenegro work the same way, with booths on the motorways
- Carrying some local currency helps, even though cards are widely accepted
Note: the cross-border line is ETERNAL’s contractual approval and administration fee. It does not include tolls or road charges, which remain the driver’s responsibility.
